Toshiba Laptop Rebooting Sporadically

If you laptop reboots sporadically its probably due to a few things but in my case the laptop would work fine for hours then you would hear a tick sound and it was instantly off as if the battery just went flat.

After a while this began to get progressively worse, the unit would last a few minutes and in some cases a few seconds then shut off.

The fan would get quite loud at times as it increases the air through the heat-sink fins to cool the Laptop.

First quick fix is to get out the vacuum and suck up any air vents in the Laptop case and hopefully  remove all of the dust without having to pull the unit apart.

In my case this didn't fix the problem and I know it wasn't a power supply or Battery because the battery was removed and and the power supply was replaced with an another one I had lying around.

My experience told me that it was due to overheating of either the CPU or the GPU (Graphics chip), both these chips have silicon heat pads attached the copper heat pipe and I was sure it was the cause of it shutting down..

I removed all the old pads and purchased some new heat pads but this did not help and it seemed to get worse and shutdown more often.

The pads where not dissipating the heat well enough even if I add some thermal paste (heat-sink compound)

Before this problem of the PC shutting down the Graphics chip would display weird colored lines on the screen which would come up mainly on boot-up, I originally put it down to a faulty graphics chip or driver.

I cleaned off the old heat-sink pads again but this time cleaned it thoroughly using a bottle of Isopropyl and an old tooth brush,.

This is important as you don't want leave behind any of the old stuff and as it had been there for a few years it took a while to clean of the CPU board.

Be careful not to press to hard as you will damage the components next to the Chip.

There was also a layer of tape on the board which was probably used to protect the gold pins next the the chip from shorting out.

The tape was so old it took some time as it was baked on, do not leave this tape on, I've done many repairs in me life and old glue or tape like this can definitely short out components on the CPU board.

I reapplied some new silicon compound (Heat-sink paste) without the thermal pad because I believed the heat pads where not transferring the heat properly.

Purchased from Altronics : https://www.altronics.com.au/p/h1600a-chemtools-10g-syringe-silicone-heatsink-compound/

I also applied some compound to where the chips were touching the heat-sink then screwed the heat-sink back on to the motherboard.

In the below video I show you how to pull apart the laptop to get to the heat-sink and CPU and GPU

Fixed no GPU colored lines and no more PC shutdown.

Computer Won't Boot Accidentally Deleted Windows Boot Partition MBR

This all started when one of my USB stick (Pen-drive) stopped working, after downloading multiple format tools and trying to format the pen-drive it just refused to work.
In the process of I accidentally damaged my C drive Boot partition and now could not boot into windows.
When I used the original Windows 7 CD it told me during the installation that I could not use this version which was weird as this was the original Windows 7 ultimate CD.
I went to the Microsoft website and downloaded an updated copy.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7

Enter the original product key then press verify and your download will start.

The new version worked fine and I could use this to go to command prompt and try to retrieve the partition.

In failing this you can always install Windows again and when prompted select Keep My Files
option.

Am I Running A 32 Bit or 64 Bit Version of VLC

Running VLC then looking clicking on Help then about doesn't help, this will only give you the version you have not whether its a 32 bit version or a 64bit version

If you right click on the your shortcut icon, then properties, then shortcut, you can see that this has been installed in the C:\Program Files (x86) folder so that means this installation of VLC is the default 32bit version.

If you go to the download page : https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html and hover the mouse over the download button it will show you that it is downloading (vlc-3.0.5-win32.exe)
a 32 bit version by default.

To download a 64 bit version, click the arrow down then select installer for 64bit version.

The 64 bit version copies the files to the “C:\Program Files” folder

FiIe / Folder Lock - Easy File Locker

Easy File Locker : http://xoslab.com/download.html

You can either lock a file or a folder, its free and it works.

I have tested quite a few and they either say they are free and aren't or they are not reliable.

Run the program, click on the key icon, enter a password you want to lock and unlock the files/folders with.

From here you can add a file or folder, in this case I chose to add a folder, press browse (...) then select the folder, then click OK.

To lock the Files/folders click on the Green Play icon in the top left.

To unlock the Files/folders click on the Red Stop icon in the top left.

Every time you start Easy File Locker you will need to enter a password to enter the program.

If you forget the password or the you know the password and the program will not let you in for some reason (happened to me a few times) go to  C:\Users\Public\Documents\EFL
remove the user.dat file then reinstall the program https://xoslab.com/download.html

This will retain the path location and remove the password you will need to re-enter a passsword

Windows 10 PC Not Showing Up In Windows 7 Network

This is what I did to fix my issue, I started with the windows 7 Machine.

Go to Start and type Homegroup then double click on the Homegroup to run it.

Scroll to the bottom and click on Start Homegroup Troubleshooter

In my case the troubleshooter couldn't start the Peer name Resolution Protocol

To start it Manually I went to Start then Typed services, then double clicked on the services to run.

I Scrolled down to Peer name Resolution Protocol and double clicked on it to open

In my case it still wouldn't start so I checked its dependencies and found that Peer networking identity manager also needed to be started but it also would not start either.

To fix the problem I made my way to C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking and deleted
idstore.sst

If you cant see the AppData folder click on Organize, then Folder and Search Options, then view, then show hidden files and folders and drives.

I then made my way to the windows 10 machine

Typed Settings, clicked on it

 Network and Internet

 Then Network Reset

I rebooted both machines and all shared locations were displayed
